The University of Hertfordshire is a public university in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. The university is based largely in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Its antecedent institution, Hatfield Technical College, was founded in 1948 and was identified as one of 25 Colleges of Technology in the United Kingdom in 1959. In 1992, Hatfield Polytechnic was granted university status by the British government and subsequently renamed University of Hertfordshire.

The university is among the top 50 UK universities chosen by major employers for graduates. Hertfordshire has also been awarded a European Commission HR Excellence in Research badge. Hertfordshire is ranked in the top two universities in the east of England region for employability, second only to Cambridge and London School of Economics.

With a student community of over 25,130 including more than 5,200 international students that together represent 100 countries, the university has a global network of over 165,000 alumni. The university is one of Hertfordshire's largest employers with over 2,700 staff, 812 of which are academic members of staff and a turnover of more than £235 million. The university is a member of Association of Commonwealth Universities and University Alliance.

2017

  • The University of Hertfordshire celebrates 25 years as a University.
  • We now have a student community of over 24,600 on UK based programmes including more than 3,800 international students, and more than 6,400 students studying our courses outside the UK.
  • Kaspar, the robot that is changing the lives of children with autism around the UK and internationally, has been selected to be part of a special ‘Robots’ exhibition at London’s Science Museum.
  • The Ele House is 40 years old. The Students’ Union building was named by students after its resemblance to the Elephant House at London Zoo. It later became known affectionately as the ‘Ele House’.
  • Alumni Jody Cundy awarded an OBE for services to Swimming and Cycling, having represented Great Britain at 6 Summer Paralympics winning 7 gold medals across both events.

2016

  • HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, returns to open the Science Building. It was The Duke’s fourth visit. He first visited in 1952 to open the Hatfield Technical College, our predecessor.
  • Student Billy Vunipola (Business and Sport Management online) wins England Rugby Player of the Year Award.
  • Alumni Nicki Combarro (BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, 1996) supported Team GB athletes at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. Nicki was also the Team England physiotherapist for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014, Delhi 2010, Melbourne 2006 and Manchester 2002, and has been selected to lead Team GB’s physiotherapists at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
  • Alumni Jody Cundy won gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
  • Research Themes are launched to assist in the development of Research Excellence. The six themes are Food; Global Economy; Health and Well-being; Heritage, Cultures and Communities; Information and Security, and Space.

2015

  • Flare celebrates 10 years of supporting budding entrepreneurs. Since its launch in 2005, flare has given over 1000 students and alumni the opportunity to develop their innovative business ideas and benefit from the invaluable support and advice on offer from the competition’s supporters.
  • The University of Hertfordshire Shanghai Alumni Chapter was established. The Chapter now has three Alumni Ambassadors, over 250 members and has held three successful alumni events in the last year.

2014

  • The Hutton Hub opens its’ doors to students. This unique building brings together all student services in one location, including the Student Centre, Careers Service, Campus Pharmacy and Medical Centre, Student Union and a branch of Santander.
  • The University is awarded Bronze level of the Race Equality Charter. By becoming a member of the Race Equality Charter we are committing to doing all we can to tackle inequality and ensure that staff and students from all ethnic backgrounds receive equal opportunities.
  • Alumni Jamie Stone (BSc (Hons) Social Work, 2013) wins the highly prestigious award of ‘2014 Newly Qualified Social Worker of the Year (Adults)’. Jamie went on to win Alumnus of the Year 2015 and in doing so became the youngest ever recipient.
  • Richard Wiseman, Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology is listed in the Independent on Sunday’s top 100 people who make Britain a better place to live.
  • Hugh Jones, Professor of Astronomy leads the teams at Hertfordshire that conduct research into our stellar neighbourhood, looking for habitable planets in the ‘Goldilocks zone’ of nearby stars. 10% of all known planets have been discovered by Hugh and his colleagues.
  • Jyoti Choudrie, Professor of Information Systems, Hertfordshire Business School is known as the ‘Soft’ Broadband expert with specific expertise in the adoption of online social networks for ‘silver surfers’.
  • The Research Excellence Framework (REF) replaces the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The REF judges more than 90% of the University’s research to be of international quality.

2013

  • A student in his room.Work begins on the new Student Accommodation project on the College Lane Camus, over 2,500 attractive new bedrooms, made up of singles, doubles, studio flats and town houses, all built to BREEAM outstanding standards and delivering a true zero carbon project.
  • The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Rt. Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, visits the University of Hertfordshire.
  • As part of our Diamond Jubilee celebrations two artists are commissioned to produce artwork to mark 60 years of the UH Art collection.

Undergraduate

The normal entry requirements for undergraduate degrees are completion of 12 years of school education and successful completion of a school leaving certificate equivalent to UK 'A' Levels.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

Subject areas

The subjects available for study are divided into six groups:

  • Group 1: a literature course or a language & literature course in the student’s best language
  • Group 2: second language course (a modern or classical language)
  • Group 3: individuals and societies, including history, geography and economics
  • Group 4: experimental sciences, including biology, chemistry and physics
  • Group 5: mathematics and computer sciences, including two Standard Level courses (mathematical studies and mathematics standard) and two Higher Level courses (mathematics Higher Level and further mathematics Higher Level)
  • Group 6: the arts, including visual arts, music and theatre.

Students must study one subject from each of groups 1 to 5. Their sixth subject may come from Group 6, or be a second choice from one of the other groups, or be an authorised school-devised syllabus. The wider UCAS tariff table can be found on the UCAS website.

Postgraduate

Before you apply you should check whether you meet the entry requirements for the degree course you are interested in. The normal entry requirements for postgraduate degrees are completion of a Bachelor degree in a relevant subject area at a level equivalent to a UK second class honours degree.

University English language requirements

We require you to demonstrate your English language proficiency before an unconditional offer will be made to you. For the majority of our courses, we accept the following tests

  • GCSE English Language: Grade C or above.
  • IGCSE English: Grade C or above.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Score of 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any band) for undergraduate or 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in any band) for postgraduate.
  • Cambridge English Qualifications: B2 First (FCE) and C1 Advanced (CAE) score of 169 (with no less than 162 in any band) for undergraduate or 176 (with no less than 162 in any band) for postgraduate. C2 Proficiency (CPE) score of 180 (with no less than 162 in any band) for both undergraduate and postgraduate.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): 51 (with no less than 42 in any band) for undergraduate or 58 (with no less than 42 in any one band) for postgraduate.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 72 with band scores of reading 18, writing 17, listening 17, speaking 20 for undergraduate or a score of 79 with band scores of reading 18, writing 17, listening 17, speaking 20 for postgraduate.
  • LanguageCert International ESOL SELT: B2 (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) Listening: 33/50; Reading: 33/50: Writing: 33/50; Speaking: 33/50
  • Oxford Test of English: Equivalent score of 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any band) for undergraduate or 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in any band) for postgraduate.
  • Local English language qualifications including Indian Standard XII English Language (65% undergraduate/70% to 75% postgraduate).

IELTS, PTE and TOEFL tests are valid for 2 years and must be valid up to the date the CAS (Certificate of Acceptance for Studies) is issued.

On campus accommodation is guaranteed to all new students (whether you've applied through main cycle or Clearing), subject to personal needs and meeting application deadlines.

Living on campus is exciting, great value for money and an amazing way to meet new people. You'll benefit from 24/7 support from resident assistants and have everything you need close by; from social spaces and sports facilities, to the library and lecture theatres.

All rooms have fast wifi, ethernet outlet, TV aerial socket, desk with storage, lamp, chair and a wardrobe (2 of each in twin room). All rooms apart from Single en suite have a bedside cabinet with storage shelf.
